History of the Manchester Storm
The Manchester Storm were founded in the 1995/1996 season. The ISL (Ice Hockey Superleague), the league in which they now play, was not in function then, so the Storm played in the British League Division One.
In their first season they rapidly rose to the top of the league and their first home game at the 'Storm shelter' (the Manchester Evening News Arena, then known as the Nynex Arena) attracted a crowd of 10,034, which was only 16 short of the UK attendance record at that time.
By the end of the Storm's first season, the record for British ice hockey attendance had been broken quite a few times at the Arena and by the end of the 1998-99 season over a million fans had entered the Arena to watch their hockey team play.
The Storm's success continued to rise: on Sunday, 23rd Feburary, 1997, they broke their own British attendance record of 16,334 when an amazing 17,245 fans came to the game, which was a sell-out. To add to the glory of it all, that game was one in which the Storm beat the Sheffield Steelers ;) and made another British record...and a European ice hockey record to boot.
The 1996/1997 season saw the Storm win the title of Division One Champions, and they received a promotion into the newly formed Superleague.
The Manchester Evening News Arena has been named as Europe's best venue, with its state-of-the-art video-wall and scoreboard. The atmosphere is electric, ice hockey is an awesome, breath-taking game with its immense speed and skill...it's a whole new puck game ;)
